How to make a Wall Hanging using Punches | Photo Tutorial

Written by Khushboo

Wall Hanging

Hello crafters! It’s me Khushboo from Mumzy Notebook. It’s a new month and time for a  new theme at Pretty Paper Studio. This month at Pretty Paper Studio we’re putting our spot light on punches. Now, I am sure you all have a hole puncher at home or your office for all the paper work that needs filing. However, did you know that you can get punches of different shapes and sizes, reliving you of the hassle to cut out the same shapes over and over again. So, whether you are thinking of making star shaped confetti to fill in balloons or snow flake confetti to decorate your table over Christmas dinner, there is a punch for it all. Just check Pretty Paper Studio’s online store to see the vast stock of punches they have.

Wall Hanging

For this month’s ‘Mom and Me’ craft, my daughter and I decided to make a colourful wall hanging to hang over her bed. One of the walls in her room is covered in butterfly stickers and that inspired me to go for the butterfly punch. Keep reading to see what other materials were required to make this butterfly and flower Wall hanging, and the steps involved.

Wall Hnaging Materials

Step 1: Work with the punches

Using the EK Success Large Butterfly punch on the Bazzil Metallic Gold cardstock, I punched out 18 butterflies.

Using the EK Success Large Flower punch on the two colourful cardstocks, and only using the outer flower shape, I punched out as many flowers as I could.

I wanted to create 3D butterflies and flowers that would look alike from every side. Therefore, for each butterfly and/or flower, I would require 3 punch outs. Each of the three punch outs were folded in half and stuck to each other, along with the Trade marker Hemp Metallic cord in the middle. The Thermoweb iCraft Ultra Bond Adhesive glue is perfect to use because it had strong bondage, with minimum mess and would dry quick and clear.

This process with the punch outs was repeated with 6 hemp cords of random sizes, depending on how long I wanted the wall hanging to be.

The butterfly punch outs were stuck to the end of the hemp cords, while the flower punch outs were stuck at random places along the hemp cords.

Step 2: Work with the wreath

I used two identical size hemp cords and tied it in an X formation on the top part of the Darice 8’’ Grapevine Wreath. I also added more hemp cord of a shorter size, where the X meets, to help with hanging the wreath.

Next, I started to tie the 6 hemp cords, previously assembled with the 3D butterfly and flower punch outs. The hemp cords were evenly spaced and tied towards the inner end of the wreath.

I also used some hemp cord to go along the entire circumference of the wreath, to add more of a  metallic look.

Step 3: Assemble and decorate

I used some more random sized hemp cord and tied a glitzy sparkling embellishment bead at the end of each cord. As before, I stuck some more 3D flower punch outs to it too. I tied these new cords to the wreath at random places, trying to fill in any empty space. Using the adhesive glue, I also stuck some of the smaller sized sparkling embellishments on the wreath itself. Finally, I decorated the front of the wreath with some glitter glue.

I loved the fact that the punches were so easy to use and that even my daughter was able to help me out with punching the various shapes. We could have easily carried on with punching a lot more until we ran out of the cardstocks, and depending on how many flowers or butterflies you want on your wreath, you too could do the same. We both are extremely pleased with the outcome of this Wall Hanging and especially how it shimmers when it catches the sunlight.
