How to create a Pop Up Butterfly Card | Photo Tutorial

Written by Mummy On My Mind

Hello crafters! This is Zeyna from Mummy On My Mind back with another Mom & Child craft, this time creating a project for February.

The theme for February is…yes, you guessed it: “Love”. How could it not be, right? Between my husband and I, we don’t exactly celebrate V-day, but I did love exchanging cards with him. This was pre-kids of course, and it’s a shame this practice fizzled out. That is why, I wanted to rekindle those memories with a lovely pop up card for my beloved, with the help of my imaginative toddler of course to create a beautiful splatter effect for the butterfly wings using mere chalk!

This card is inspired by this Butterfly Card tutorial by Jennifer.

Below is the photo tutorial of how it was made and list of all PPS items used in this project can be found at the bottom of the post. Let’s get started!

I first began by drawing the outline for two butterfly wings on two pieces of card that were smaller than A4 size. These, once cut, will slot into each other to create a whole butterfly. I created some folds as shown in the above image to create the pop-up effect.

Once cut out, I slotted the wings together and stuck them in place on a beautiful double sided A4 paper.

To cover the green colour, I then placed two smaller pieces of white paper on top, sticking it in place using adhesive, and then decorated with washi tapes and a couple of stickers. I ensured the folds I had created on the wings allowed the butterfly to “flap” them when the card is opened.

For the inside of the wings, using the cut out of the butterfly wing as a template, I cut out a sheet the same size on clear sticky sheet.

Now it was time for my older son to get stuck in! Master Z created chalk dust by rubbing the chalk against a plastic card, making sure the colourful dust fell on top of the sticky clear plastic sheet.

I absolutely love the outcome of the colourful dust, how pretty does it look!

I attached the colourful plastic sheets behind the butterfly wings and cut to size. The only thing now was to decorate and personalise the butterfly pop up card.

For the front of this card, I went for some gorgeous stickers and a hand written quote that says “Don’t just fly, Soar!”

For the inside, I went back to add some more stickers and painted over the green of the butterfly wings, adding some patterned details with my pens. And Voila, our Butterfly Pop Card was ready!
