Festive Project Life Pages with Shimmer Effects

Written by Harkee Wilson

Hi crafters, Harkee from AS they grow here with my final PPS Design Team Project Life tutorial for you. This month’s theme is “Festive” so I took that as a great opportunity to document some of my Ramadan and Eid experiences from the last month, especially as it also gives me a chance to use the lovely Islamic Greetings stamps produced by Pretty Paper Studio.

To my mind the festive theme and Ramadan and Eid in an Arab setting all call for shimmering golds and patterns so I have tried to incorporate that into this layout in a number of ways. All the materials I used are linked below (and most of them pictured above) so you can have a go yourself.

The first way I incorporated shimmer was to use a scrapbook paper featuring a glittered gold pattern to create a title card. I cut it down to 4″x6″ size, rounded the corners and then added a medallion greeting stamped with the Ramadan Kareem stamp from the PPS Islamic Greetings set of stamps. The circle was just cut from pink card stock using a paper punch but then I added a line of metallic gold around the edge using the Finetec Coliro pearlised paints for some extra shimmer. I repeated this process for another card featuring the Eid Mubarak stamp.

For the next two filler cards I used a couple of patterned cards from the Project Life Value Kit – Bohemian, these have a gold foil design built into them so also add a gold shimmer to the layout. On top of this patterned back ground I added titles using hand lettering and brush lettering techniques. I used the Finetec Coliro gold and pink pearlised paints to brush letter the Iftar/Suhoor labels.  These paints actually come out really well on dark paper and you can appreciate the shimmer much more than on white card.

The Palace and Al Majlis labels were hand lettered using the Tombow dual brush marker in carded black.  I love how the brush tip on one side gives you these thick, bold strokes while the finer tip on the other side of the pen can be used for more controlled and finer strokes.  These labels were lettered on a circle punched out of regular pink cardstock and mounted on a base  scallop punched from black cardstock to complement and co-ordinate with the other title cards.

For my final technique I wanted to try out using masking fluid with watercolour paints, this was something I was introduced to at a PPS watercolour workshop I attended over a year ago but haven’t used since. First I “drew” out the design I was masking off with the fluid.  I used a plain Project Life card as the base as I wanted white to be the colour showing through the final painted design but if you want another colour you can use regular coloured cardstock. The Coliro pearlised paints actually come out much better on coloured paper in any event.

Once the masking fluid is dry paint over the design as desired. The masking fluid creates a barrier to the material underneath, similar to tape resist projects if you have ever tried those. When the paint is dry you can carefully peel off the masking fluid leaving a clean pattern or design underneath.  I stuck the moon motif and patterned panel I had made using this technique onto black card stock cut down to 4″x6″ cards to make two journalling cards. I then added some journaling notes using my gold Pental gel pen.

I then popped all the cards and photos into Design L pocket pages after I’d rounded off the corners for consistency with the Bohemian patterned cards. This is the final layout, I hope you like it! Have you recorded your Ramadan and Eid memories? What festivities do you as a family take part in and how do you preserve those traditions and memories?

I hope I have inspired some of you to take up Project Life memory keeping or have given you some ideas on how to take simple layouts to the next level. My time on the PPS Design Team has now come to an end but I will continue to work on memory keeping and I hope you do too. There are lots of other Project Life Tutorials in the PPS Blog archives so do check them out when you are looking for inspiration or ideas!
