Hello Love Hanging Decor (Secret Santa) | Photo Tutorial

Written by Donna Ong

Hello everyone. Donna here to share my December project. As you all know by now, we’re playing “Secret Santa” this month. Nikita is my Secret Santa and her challenge is for me to incorporate her 3 items (heart, acetate and chalk).

At first glance, it’s quite easy, right? Well, yep it is! But now how do I use them in one project… it took me days to make up my mind because I got tons of ideas brewing in my head. Finally decided to do a hanging decor.

Here is a step-by-step tutorial you can follow in case you want to do it yourself.

First off, these are the three items from my Secret Santa. I don’t have chalk but I do have “chalk” board paint 😀

Since I wanted a sturdy base, I looked for something that I could recycle.

I used this heart shaped die cut to trace on the card board (HEART – Check!)

Covered both sides with patterned papers

I cut strips to use as fringes. Tip: spray the strips with a bit of water to make them pliable and easier to manipulate.

Then, I cut some shapes and painted with chalk paint. I doodled borders using a white gel pen. I don’t have any chalk around so I used white paint instead to slightly smudge on the painted card board shapes and somehow make them look like chalk board. (CHALK- Check!)

Fussy cut these from one of the papers. Making your own paper clips is addicting. I want to make lots of them lol!

I used the previous heart shaped die cut and trace it onto the acetate. Instead of using foam tape to make a shaker box, I stitched to close the edges.

This is how it looks like after. I tried shaking it and good thing the sequins and microbeads didn’t fall lol 😀

I used this Triangle score guide to make some small paper gems

Now the more fun part starts. Assembling! I used some gauze/thread to create a messy base for my layers. I layered some photos and used one of the paper clips. I tied some lace, rikraks and paper twine for hanging

I love layering stuff. But always remember to keep everything balanced. I try to look at my project in a distance before adhering everything else to minimize (if I couldn’t avoid) mistakes

I love these paper gems even though I messed up with the dots of liquid pearls. I thought it has dried up already when I tied the paper gems. Lesson learned, be patient lol

The 4 different challenge theme items given by the respective DTs are:

1. Bubble wrap, watercolour, triangle : Ujjwal

2. Chipboards, any colour mist, matchstick : Bipasha

3. Feathers, Paint Brush, Frame : Pooja

4. Chalk, hearts, acetate : Nikita

Here is what you have to do for this month’s challenge:

1. Create a project incorporating any of the DTs’ selected 3 items, mentioning it in your project post.

2. Upload your entry at our members gallery and link us up in this thread in the forum “December 2015 challenge – “Secret Santa”.

3. All entries are due by December 31, 2015.
